Watercolour - Objects & Composition

A focus on technique and attention to fine detail will support you to master the elements of watercolour composition and create beautiful works.

This course will develop skills and confidence to use watercolours for object drawing and still life. Topics include the principles of watercolour application and theory, sketching proportionately, creating depth in an object, detailing with light and tone and the fundamentals of perspective and composition.

MATERIALS (New Students - please check the class is running before purchasing materials).

Brushes/Equipment

Sketch Book: A4 or A5, spiral or stitched binding

Pencils: 2H, HB

Plastic ruler

Eraser

Absorbent good quality paper towel

Paper: Watercolour paper: A4 Arches or any equivalent brand: 300gsm, (smooth finish is must)

Mixing palette: White plastic mixing tray or WHITE china plate

Brushes: Good quality watercolour round brushes No. 1, 4 and 6

Watercolour Paint & Container

Orange Red - Windsor and Newton-Bright red or Cadmium red, Schmincke – Cadmium red light

Violet red - Windsor and Newton-Permanent rose, Schmincke – Magenta

Orange yellow - Windsor and Newton-Windsor yellow or Cadmium yellow light, Schmincke – Cadmium yellow light

Green yellow - Windsor and Newton-Windsor lemon, Schmincke - Lemon yellow

Green blue - Windsor and Newton -Windsor blue (green shade), Schmincke - phthalo blue

Violet blue - Windsor and Newton - French ultramarine, Schmincke - Ultramarine finest

Payne’s grey – Windsor and Newton

White gouache – Windsor and Newton

Water Container: A large, old, clean ice-cream container or similar.

Watercolours can be any artist quality brand. No matter how helpful, persuasive and convincing the art store staff are please purchase the particular materials on the list. Other colours can be acquired later; these make a good beginning. Handouts to be provided by the tutor.
