Pre-election candidate briefing

workshop

Are you interested in becoming a local councillor?

Councillors can play a key role in making decisions that influence both the short-term concerns and long-term strategic direction of their local community. It is a big commitment, and prospective councillors need to know what will be expected of them – the challenges, responsibilities and opportunities.

This information session will provide those interested in becoming a councillor a better understanding of the role and responsibilities as an elected member of council.

The candidate briefing session will be conducted by former Mayor of Leichhardt and Local Government NSW facilitator, Maire Sheehan.

The sessions will cover

  • Key requirements for becoming a candidate
  • The legislated role of a councillor, mayor and as a member of the governing body
  • How the councillor role fits in with other roles and various levels of government
  • Key expectations and potential challenges in becoming a councillor
  • How a councillor’s and council role fits in with the local government Integrated Planning and Reporting framework
  • Key elements of council meetings,  code of conduct and conflict of interest
  • The importance of diversity in council, and supports available to encourage participation.
