Oil Painting

Learn about paint materials, organising your palette, tone and composition and different ways of applying paint as you build towards a finished project.  

Beginners and intermediate students are instructed in the fundamentals of this traditional painting method, learning techniques that lead to larger projects. 

You will be introduced to new techniques so you build your skills. Students will learn about paint materials, the fundamental skills of tone and composition, different ways of applying paint, organising your palette and colours and how to move on to larger individual projects. This course is for beginners and intermediate students.

Materials Required (please discuss with tutor in first class if you are unsure):

  • 1 x set small Acrylic tubes (best value to start with a set. Recommended brands are Atelier ‘Interactive’, Matisse ‘Structure’, Golden, W&N)
  • 1 x Titanium white
  • 3 x Soft Haired Square or Filbert brushes – 2.5cm, 1.5cm, 1cm width
  • 1 x Soft Haired Round brush – 3mm width (Bunnings ‘Renoir’ brushes are good)
  • 1 x rectangular A3 size white tear-off palette or A3 size flat white palette
  • 1 x cotton rag
  • 2 x small painting surfaces for Weeks 1 and 2: approx. 30 x 40cm (canvas, canvas board or canvas paper)

Note: Best paint is quite stiff in texture. Best white from an art store.
