Mastering the Portrait: Technique & Tradition

Join us for an immersive Fine Arts portraits class designed for aspiring artists of all levels! This course will take you on a creative journey through essential design elements and principles, focusing on colour theory, composition, tone and basic perspective. Through hands-on exercises and guided projects, you'll learn how to effectively use these foundational concepts to enhance your artwork.

Participants will explore the impact of colour in art, understand the relationships between different elements, and develop skills in creating balanced and dynamic compositions. You’ll also gain insights into tonal values and perspective techniques, enabling you to add depth and realism to your pieces. Whether you're looking to refine your skills or experiment with new techniques, this class offers a supportive environment to express your creativity and develop your unique artistic voice.

Materials list (please discuss with teacher on first class if you are unsure)

  • 1 x A3 Sketchbook - The 50-page (tear out) sketchbook, "Art Spectrum Cartridge and Paper Pad" 110 (g/m) from 'Art Shed Online'.  

  •  Sketchbook can also be used in painting component of the course for colour theory etc.  

  •  1 x 4B pencil 3 x conte crayon sticks (black, terracotta and white)  

  •  1 x black water soluble Artline pen.  

  •  2 medium size canvases can purchase a few weeks after the course has commenced.  

Acrylic paints  

  •  1 x Atelier 80ml Titanium White (avail from art stores or 'Art Shed Online') - or other brands such as Winsor & Newton, Matisse, Chromecryl, MontMarte and more.  

  •  1x Atelier Lemon Yellow 

  •  1x Atelier 80ml Cadmium Yellow  

  •  1 x Atelier 80ml Vermillion  

  • 1 x Atelier 80ml Brilliant Violet 

  • 1 x Atelier 80ml Paynes Grey 

  • 1 x Atelier 80ml French Ultramarine  

  • 1 x Atelier 80ml Phthalo Colbalt Turquoise Light  

  • 1 x Atelier 80ml Permanent Green  

Brushes and Equipment  

  • Affordable, range of flat and round brushes can be found at Officeworks, ('Royal & Langnickel Value 25 Piece Paintbrush Set).  

  • 1 x 30 x 40 cm Easy Clean Palette etc. (1 x 'tear off sheet palette)  

  • Rags (cotton is best)  

  • Jar for water
