Life Drawing

Life Drawing at Ku-ring-gai Art Centre is for all artists, from experienced artists wishing to renew their skills to new students wanting to learn these skills. Through the development of taught observations, each student is individually guided to realise their individual goals.

Each week you will practice drawing the naked form in a series of poses from quick sketch work to longer, more considered studies. Male and female models change weekly.

Kim Sotheren, your expert tutor, will show you how to see form, direction, and movement in your subject. You will learn about the use of light and shade to produce form and depth. You will be shown how the varying axis of the circle and ovals are used to observe foreshortening with the reclining figure. You will gain an awareness of the triangles in the negative spaces and how this helps with the proportions along with the observed perspectives and the awareness of spatial relations.

This class will help you find your own particular interest in techniques and media that you enjoy to use.

Some of the techniques you will learn include:

  • Cross hatching

  • Blending

  • Two-handed drawing

  • Linear

  • Blind visual memory

  • Broken line to reflect light

  • Coloured papers

  • Drawing with twigs

The class has an experienced nude male or female model each week. Some weeks they may be partially clothed with a ballet skirt, hat, or boots for example, with poses ranging from 5 mins to half an hour. There is a good variety with our models making each class interesting, as all have a choice of creative input or props that they can bring to their work.
