Foundations of Oil Painting

Explore foundational oil painting techniques through a variety of exercises and painting practices. 

This course is designed for beginners who wish to learn the basics of oil painting, as well as experienced students wishing to extend their knowledge and skills. Students have the opportunity to explore foundational oil painting techniques through a variety of exercises such as portraiture and still life studies. Students will be shown professional painting practices such as palette mixing, brush cleaning, planning processes, as well as discussions of painting mediums and pigments. 
 
Jackson is open to those who wish to work in acrylics on request. 

Materials required  

Support: 

  • Stretched canvas/board/canvas paper Any size is fine to start with, we will discuss further in class.  

Mediums:  

  • Linseed oil Artist quality  

  • Odourless Artist’s Turpentine  

Recommended Colours:  

  • Titanium White  

  • Zinc White  

  • Raw Umber  

  • Burnt Umber  

  • Ivory Black  

  • Yellow ochre  

  • Ultramarine  

  • Cadmium Red  

  • Cadmium Yellow  

  • Alizarin Red  

*Cadmium can be substituted for spectrum or equivalent.  

Recommended Brushes:  

  • Any that you already own Round shape, a range of sizes. At least one small fine-tipped brush, sizes 0 or 00.  

Other:  

  • Jars  

  • Palette  

  • Rags  

  • Paper towel
