New park at 9 Dumaresq Street, Gordon

Council is creating a new public open space in Gordon. The park will provide a new green open space for residents and workers in Gordon close to local shops and services. This is a short-term solution until long-term plans for the Gordon Civic Hub project are developed.

About the project

In 2007, Council acquired three adjoining properties in Dumaresq Street, Gordon for the purposes of forming a park as part of the longer-term plans for the Gordon Civic Hub. Council recently demolished one of the properties, 9 Dumaresq Street, because the cost of repairs became too expensive. In November last year, Council passed a motion to convert this site into a local recreational open space.

9 Dumaresq Street is a little over 100 metres from the middle of the Gordon town centre and is well covered by trees.

Council has the opportunity to facilitate a new local open space area for passive recreation at 9 Dumaresq Street at a relatively low cost until longer term plans can be developed for the broader Gordon Civic Hub project.

With simple low-cost additions Council plans to transform the site into a usable outdoor space. This will include:

  • Removal of the existing metal fence with the retention of the fence on the western boundary.
  • Earthworks and retaining walls to create some flatter more useable grassed areas.
  • New seating, picnic bench and a bin.
  • Upgraded access from Dumaresq Street.
  • Protection and retention of all existing trees.
  • New planting of groundcovers and low shrubs for increased passive surveillance along the street frontage.

Recent community consultation

Council sought community feedback on the concept design for a new park at 9 Dumaresq St Gordon in May and June 2024. This consultation resulted in a variety of differing opinions on inclusions for the upgrade, but overall residents were supportive of the creation of a new open space.

Council has finalised a concept plan based on this feedback; however only minor additions are achievable due to the limited budget of this project.

The main updates to the plan are as follows:

  • Two additional bench seats and a picnic table.
  • Due to privacy concerns, we are adding a material barrier to the existing western boundary fence line.
