Ku-ring-gai Council has developed a draft study which examines how to meet the community’s recreational needs in the future.

The draft Recreation Needs Study was prepared over nine months and incorporates a range of data on current and future needs. It includes detailed analysis of sporting participation and interviews with residents, sporting groups and other stakeholders.

Preliminary findings by the study are:

  • Ku-ring-gai’s population and sporting needs are diversifying, with a high level of participation in organised sport matched by increasing interest in new sports such as pickleball
  • Land for new facilities is prohibitively expensive and as a result there should be a renewed focus on multipurpose facilities
  • People want more spaces for informal and relaxing recreational activities such as walking and picnics

The draft study also included an audit of the current facilities owned by both Council and private providers to identify gaps or oversupply, as well as opportunities for more effective use.

Mayor Jeff Pettett said the draft study was now on public exhibition for comment until Friday 1 September.

“This is probably one of the most important studies the Council has ever done on sporting and recreation needs,” he said.

“After the community has given feedback the Council will consider next steps.”
