Community feedback is being sought on a long-term blueprint which seeks to help Ku-ring-gai residents more easily travel between parks and retail centres on a network of green and shady routes

The draft Ku-ring-gai Green Grid Strategy outlines regional, suburban, local and bushland routes, across the Ku-ring-gai local government area.

The draft strategy states that a range of improvements will be considered for these routes, and implemented following community engagement and when funding is available.

Potential improvements to proposed urban routes could include additional street trees in areas of low canopy cover, along with new footpaths, shared paths, bike lanes and verge or rain gardens.

Other improvements could include the bundling of aerial cables, to allow greater tree canopy, and additional route signage.

Bushland routes could see path upgrades and improved signage.

Ku-ring-gai Mayor Christine Kay said the draft Green Grid Strategy was on exhibition until 12 March.

“This draft strategy lays the groundwork for a network of routes where people can safely travel to local places of interest, while at the same time enjoy tree shade and the local environment,” Mayor Kay said. “It will also help us deliver biodiversity enhancements in these areas.”

Community feedback will be considered before the strategy is adopted by Council.

Following this adoption, Council will undertake more targeted consultation on a ward-by-ward basis to further refine the proposed routes and inform an action and implementation plan. This consultation could involve meetings in local parks.

Ku-ring-gai’s draft strategy aligns with the NSW Government’s Sydney Green Grid initiative.

“We look forward to receiving feedback on this important document, and as we look to roll out initiatives flowing from the document,” Mayor Kay said.
