Information session for prospective councillors

A briefing session for those wishing to stand for election as a councillor in Ku-ring-gai will be held next month at the Council Chambers in Gordon.

The briefing is being hosted by LGNSW, the peak body for councils in New South Wales. Maire Sheehan, former Mayor at Leichhardt and an experienced local government facilitator, will chair the session.

The NSW Electoral Commission will open nominations for candidates on 5 August with nominations closing on 14 August.

The briefing will be held on Thursday 11 July between 6pm and 9.30pm at Ku-ring-gai Council Chambers, 818 Pacific Highway Gordon.

The information session aims to provide a better understanding of the role of councillors and their responsibilities as an elected member of Council, for those interested in standing for election. 

Topics covered include:

  • Key requirements for becoming a candidate for election
  • The legislated role of a councillor and mayor
  • How the councillor role fits in with other roles and other levels of government
  • Key expectations and potential challenges in becoming a councillor
  • How a councillor’s role fits with the local government Integrated Planning and Reporting framework
  • Key elements of council meetings, code of conduct and conflicts of interest
  • The importance of diversity in council and support available to encourage participation.

Those wishing to attend the briefing session should complete a registration form at Pre-election candidate briefing Ku-ring-gai (nsw.gov.au) by 10 July. Participants have the option of attending in person or online.
