Join in the fun and give your local area a sparkle on Sunday 3 March 2024.
Ku-ring-gai Council is once again getting behind Clean Up Australia Day and encouraging residents to roll up their sleeves for the environment.
More than 21 million Aussies have participated in Clean Up Australia activities and events over the past three decades.
Council is urging locals to get a group of friends, colleagues or neighbours together and register a clean-up site or join an existing registered site.
Pip Kiernan, Chair of Clean Up Australia says: “Clean Up Australia Day is the largest volunteer clean up event across the nation each year and the most practical way to educate and demonstrate waste prevention.”
“By rolling up our sleeves and witnessing the sheer quantity as well as the common types of litter lining our streets, bushlands and waterways, we can gain a better insight into our own personal or household footprints on the environment. It encourages each of us to consider practical ways we can prevent that litter in the first place.”
“Cigarette butts, coffee cups and soft plastics are amongst the commonly reported items collected by volunteers who are encouraged at each site to report their findings but you can’t help but be shocked by the scale of what ends up in our environment as litter,” she continued.
Ku-ring-gai Mayor Sam Ngai said he was excited to see the community come together for an important cause.
“We take pride in being the green heart of Sydney, and our residents are especially connected to preserving the environment.”
“I’m looking forward to seeing everyone out together and pitching in to help our area stay pristine.”
“When people register their site with Clean Up Australia, Council will come and collect the rubbish from those specific sites after the event.”
Registrations for Clean Up Australia Day 2024 are now open at cleanup.org.au. All volunteers receive a free Clean Up kit, containing gloves and bags and other resources, with packs for individuals, families and community groups available (businesses are asked to pay a small fee to cover costs).
