Check out an intriguing series of free author talks coming to the library in the next two months.

Library Up Late at Gordon Library will be on Thursday evenings during September and October, with a series of interesting - and at times challenging - author talks.

The Library Up Late series gets underway tomorrow Thursday 5 September with psychiatrist Dr Mark Cross lifting the lid on the true state of Australia’s mental health care system. His book Mental State includes his own stories of working inside the system, as well as the experiences of consumers attempting to navigate it and the practitioners working within it.

Next Thursday biographer and scholar Brigitta Olubas will take us through the rich correspondence over forty years between two of Australia’s leading female authors. Shirley Hazzard and Elizabeth Harrower began writing to each other in the 1970s and their letters cover world events, their daily lives and their complex relationship.

On Thursday 19 September Australian poet Omar Sakr discusses his latest book Non-Essential Work, which delves deep into his loves and losses to create a riveting literary experience. Omar is the son of Lebanese and Turkish migrants and his work explores the multifaceted nature of identity, same sex relationships, family and heritage.

Other Library Up Late author talks include Richard Holden discussing Australia’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic; Marina Kamenev on the topic of family in the 21st century; Amanda Laugesen on the unique words that define Australia and Nadine Cohen exploring the sensitive subject of dying.

For full details of all the talks and to book go to krg.nsw.gov.au/libraryuplate Spaces are limited for each free author talk and bookings are essential.

Gordon Library is open until 8pm Monday to Thursday, with the talks happening between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Thursdays.
