Ku-ring-gai Council is holding a public forum addressing the critical issue of illegal tree removal in local neighbourhoods on Tuesday 26 March in Council Chambers.

Ku-ring-gai prides itself on having more trees than most council areas in Sydney, with a current canopy cover of 45% and illegal tree removal threatens this invaluable community asset.

The forum will discuss challenges faced in curbing the threat, as well as potential solutions and hear from the community about their insights and experiences in protecting Ku-ring-gai's trees and urban forest.

Areas to cover include:

  1. Identifying the primary obstacles in sustaining and enhancing our tree canopy.
  2. Compliance and regulation – measures that can be taken to prevent or remedy tree removal.
  3. Education – discouraging people from wanting to remove trees.

The forum is an opportunity for residents to have a voice and develop community-driven strategies to turn the tide on illegal tree loss in Ku-ring-gai.

Council has strengthened tree regulations and will continue to work with the community to protect trees and valued canopy. This includes increased scrutiny of building works, monitoring any illegal tree removal and enforcing their replacement and penalties.
