An all-ages chess tournament is on at the library between 10am and 1pm on Saturday 22 July.

The inaugural Ku-ring-gai tournament is being organised by library staff to celebrate World Chess Day, which falls on 20 July.

The Day is recognised across the world and celebrates chess as one of the most ancient, intellectual and cultural games.

As an affordable and inclusive activity, chess can be played anywhere and by anyone, crossing any barriers of language, age, gender, physical ability or social status.

Games in this month’s chess tournament will run from 10am-12pm, with the finals in each age group taking place between 12 noon and 1pm.

The three age groups are 7 to 11 years, 12 to 15 years and 16 years and older.

Prizes will be on offer to those competing in the finals, with the overall winners in each category crowned chess champions for Ku-ring-gai.

Mayor Jeff Pettett said the tournament was tapping into the newfound popularity of chess.

“Young people are playing chess more than ever and it’s also a great game for keeping older generations minds sharp.”

“If the tournament’s popular we’ll consider making it a regular event.”

Mayor Pettett added that chess boards were available at all Ku-ring-gai library branches if people wanted to play with friends or family.

Entry to the tournament is free; to book your spot go to krg.nsw.gov.au/libraryevents, call 9424 0120 or email libraryevents@krg.nsw.gov.au
