An annual award will be created to recognise inspiring and outstanding female leaders who live in the Ku-ring-gai Council area.

Ku-ring-gai Mayor Christine Kay announced the Women’s Leadership and Inspiration Award at Council’s International Women’s Day lunch on Thursday 6 March.

Mayor Kay said that in February Council had unanimously endorsed a Mayoral Minute seeking to establish the award.

The concept of the award was also strongly endorsed at Council’s Status of Women Advisory Committee meeting on Tuesday 11 February.

The award will recognise women aged 18 years or older living in the Ku-ring-gai council area who demonstrate exceptional leadership, advocacy and dedication to advancing gender equality.

“The establishment of this award represents a meaningful step in fostering gender equality and celebrating the contributions of women in our community,” Mayor Kay said.

“By providing recognition and a platform to amplify their work, the award will empower recipients and inspire future generations of women leaders.

“This initiative underscores Council’s commitment to inclusivity, representation and the advancement of women in leadership roles across various sectors.”

It is expected that nominations will be sought for the award by mid-2025.

The award winner will be announced annually at Council’s International Women’s Day celebration or another significant day aligned with women's causes.

This initiative aligns with the objectives of Ku-ring-gai Council’s 2024/25 Prevention of Violence Against Women Action Plan and broader national and state gender equality strategies.

Council’s International Women’s Day luncheon held at the Pymble Golf Club attracted some 120 attendees and featured guest speaker Juanita Phillips.

Ms Phillips anchored ABC’s 7pm News in Sydney for 21 years and shared her experience of balancing career and family life.

Guests were also invited to participate in round table discussions on a range of issues, including how to promote respectful relationships and listing the most pressing issues facing women in society today.

The table feedback will be used to inform and influence Council’s ongoing work. In November 2024 Council launched a Ku-ring-gai says no to gender-based violence campaign.
