International Day of People with Disability

This International Day of People with Disability and every day, Ku-ring-gai Council is committed to supporting people with disability and making our community welcoming for everyone.

This year Ku-ring-gai was recognised as a Dementia Friendly Community, helping people living with dementia and their carers to feel included and supported. Our Understanding Dementia booklets are available in Libraries and provide a comprehensive guide to services and supports available to support people with dementia and their families.

Council is also a member of the Sunflower Program, which helps people with hidden disabilities easily show they might need extra help. Sunflower Lanyards are available at Council Chambers and in our libraries, our staff have been trained to recognise the lanyards and provide wearers extra assistance.

For families with young children, Council supports a fortnightly supported playgroup in St Ives. This playgroup has specially trained facilitators available to assist with play time and offers supervision for children whilst mum/dad or carer have a cuppa and a chance to talk to others in similar circumstances and learn about what supports may be available. Open to all and targeted to families who have a child with a disability or delay or have concerns about any aspect of their child’s development.
