Smoke free Ku-ring-gai
Under the Smoke-free Environment Act 2000 smoking is prohibited in the following public areas:
- Within 10 metres of all children’s play areas under Council’s care.
-
At all Council playing fields, sporting grounds and Ku-ring-gai Fitness and Aquatic Centre.
-
At all events run or sponsored by Council.
-
In all Council-owned buildings and within 10 metres of Council-owned or managed buildings and gardens, including balconies or covered areas.
-
In all al fresco dining areas on public land.
-
In all covered bus shelters and taxi ranks.
-
All green areas - including parks, bushland and reserves.
Smoke-free areas are about increasing the health and comfort of the entire community by:
- Reducing second hand smoke - linked to health issues including heart disease, cancer, asthma and other respiratory problems. Children can be at increased risk of asthma, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections and ear problems.
- Reducing cigarette butt litter – looking after our public areas, bushland, parks and reserves.
- Making a shift towards healthier living - supporting attempts to quit and discouraging young people from taking up smoking in the first place.
